  • Lunch – Romaine, spinach and kale salad.
  • PM Snack – Coffee and greek yogurt.
  • Dinner – Tomato, vegan mozzarella and basil panini with salad.

Monday I told you about the hula hoop competition at our weekend gathering. Well, my 10 year-old nephew has become obsessed with the hula hoop, he hoops while reading his homework, he’s that good and determined to get 6-pack abs. He’s in a trending group, hula hoop workouts are becoming more popular around the country. You can burn quite a few calories working out with hoops, however, the hoops used in workouts are weighted and rotate a bit slower around the body making it a little easier than a hoop you get from the toy store. I must admit it has been a long, long time since I have hooped and I am not good at it, I certianly can’t do it as long as these two.

Hoopnotica is one of many companies that offer weighted hoops with DVD workouts and you can also search for certified instructor in your area. They were recently featured on Good Morning America.

I think I’ll start with the $5.00 toy store hoop before upgrading to the weighted hoop, the weighted hoops range from $32.99 to $149.99, have to learn how to use one again before investing that much.

Hooping is a great core workout and a good way to turn your workouts into fun playtime or make some extra money if you become a certified hoop instructor.

Below is a hoop workout you can find on You Tube. Click to see workout.

Do It Yourself Natural Hydration

We all know how important it is to hydrate and replenish during and after hard workouts, but did you know you can make your own sports drink and say goodbye to dyes, sugar syrups and artificial flavorings.

The three components needed to make a sports drink effective are water, electrolytes, (salt), and sugar.  You can easily make your own to save time and money.

  • For the water you can use plain filtered water, unsweetened green tea, fruit tea or unsweetened coconut water.
  • Electrolytes use natural sea salts.
  • Carbohydrate, use a drizzle of honey or agave nectar or splash of natural fruit juice.

Recipe 1 –  Unsweetened coconut water base, my favorite.  The level of electrolytic balance in coconut water is the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood, which makes it the perfect workout or post-workout drink.  Be sure to purchase coconut water processed thru cold sterilization, it allows the water to maintain its flavor and nutritional value.

2 1/2 to 3 cups unsweetened coconut water

1/2 cup fresh orange and papaya juice

dash of himalayan sea salt

1/2 teaspoon agave nectar

Adjust the amount of water and fresh juice to suit your taste.

Store in an airtight container in fridge.

Recipe 2 – Filtered water base.

Juice from one large grapefruit

Juice from one lime

2 1/2 to 3 cups of filtered water

dash of himalayan sea salt

1/2 teaspoon agave nectar or honey

Again you may have to adjust to suit your taste.

Store in an airtight container in fridge.

Be creative and have fun designing your own sports drink.

Have a Happy Safe Fun Memorial Day weekend!!

What I At Wednesday #25

Happy WIAW!  The meals I am sharing today are from Tuesday, since Monday I was still eating red lentil soup recommended by my hair stylist as a cure-all for tummy aches, it worked for me.  I was really hungry for more, but didn’t want to mess up my good feeling tummy.

Tuesday was my Monday because it was my first day at work for the week. I wanted it to go well so I choose foods that were pretty simple and relatively easy for my body to digest, I stuck with fruits and veggies.   Breakfast was a simple juice mix of cherry, lemon, lime and aloe vera and plenty of water.

Lunch was a romaine, mango and strawberry salad sprinkled with chia seeds. I blended a small amount of strawberries and mangos to make a dressing.

I ended my day with roasted veggie tacos served with black bean soup and strawberry mango salsa. I was feeling much better, so a little more daring with my food choices and added a bit more protein in the mix.

Make it a great WIAW and don’t forget to stop by Peas and Crayons for more WIAW.  Thanks again Jenn for hosting.

MIMM#10 and Food Remedies

I took Friday off and got my weekend started early. I got my hair done by Senekia in suite 33 at Salons by JC.  I was referred to this stylist by one of the parents at my school and I really enjoyed talking with her.  Senekia talked about her experiences as a vegan and raw foodie with a small child. Her child is a little older now and she allows her to make her own food choices, but her choices are relatively healthy.

Marvelous was my 6:30am Saturday run and lunch was a Marvelous tomato, avocado, spinach, kale and dandelion greens sandwich on Genesis sprouted bread. Oh so Yummy.

Sprouded sandwich

After a trip to Crate & Barrel I had some Marvelous goodies.  My absolute favorite is the cherry/olive pitter. With cherry season in full swing I am lovin this gadget.

During my hair appointment Friday Senekia shared with me some foods she uses for healing because she doesn’t like taking drugs.  Red lentils was one she told me she uses whenever she or her daughter aren’t feeling well. I had a chance to give it a try Sunday, I felt terrible with an upset stomach and weak from not being able to keep any food down.  She told me to simmer red lentils, bay leaf, thyme, green bell pepper, red onion, garlic powder and sea salt  until lentils are soft. I didn’t have the green peppers, I used red peppers instead.  This is a tasty dish and I felt better after having a small bowl and that was Marvelous.  Another food remedy Senekia shared was for removing excess mucus form the body by eating warm grapefruit sections.  I will be giving this one a try and I will let you know how it works.
